1. 개요

40회 시상식은 1968년 4월 10일 캘리포니아 산타모니카 Santa Monica Civic Auditorium에서 개최되었고 진행은 Bob Hope가 맡았다. 원래는 4월8일 예정이었는데 마틴 루터 킹 목사 암살 사건으로 연기가 되었다. 흑백영화 감소로 이때부터 흑백영화와 칼러 영화를 구분했던 것을 폐지하고 하나로 묶어서 상을 주었다. Bonnie and Clyde와 Guess Who's Coming to Dinner 10개 부문 후보에 올라 똑같이 3개 상을 수상했다. Doctor Dolittle은 9개 후보에 3개의 상을 수상한다. In the Heat of the Night은 7개 후보에 5개 상을 가져 최다 수상작이 된다. Camelot은 5개 후보에 3개 부문을 수상했다.
