1. 요약

29회 시상식은 1957년 3월 27일 할리우드 RKO Pantages Theatre, 뉴욕의 NBC NBC Century Theatre 에서 동시에 열렸다. Jerry Lewis, Celeste Holm이 공동 진행을 맡았다. 기술적으로 큰 변화가 있었는데, 이때 방송을 녹화할 수 있는 시스템이 갖춰졌다. 인권주의상 (Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award)이 신설되었다.

그리고, 이때부터 Best Foreign Language Film(최우수 외곡어상)이 본상으로 격상되었다. 그 첫 번째 수상작은 너무도 유명한 영화사적으로도 중요한 의미가 있는 이탈리아 영화 길(La Strada)이었다. Around the World in 80 Days(80일간의 세계일주)가 작품성을 포함해 5개 부문을 수상했다.

29회에서 특히 중요한 것은 작품상 후보가 모두 칼라 영화였다는 점이다. 본격적인 칼라 영화 시대로의 전환점으로 봐야 한다. 그리고 80일간의 세계일주, 왕과 나, 아나스타샤, 자이언트, 십계명, 전쟁과 평화, 우정 어린 설득 등 대작 영화들이 주요 상을 휩쓸었다. 헐리우드 거대자본 영화가 꽃을 활짝 피우기 시작했고, 오늘날 세계 최대의 영화 시장인 헐리우드가 확실히 존재감을 보였고 전세계 영화 시장을 석권한다고 분명히 말할 수 있던 시기라고 볼 수 있다. 1956년은 미국 블록버스터의 본격적인 시작이었다.
